Cheryl's List #64 -
March 15, 2002

Welcome to Cheryl's List! If you obtained this from someone else and would like your own FREE copy of Cheryl's List in the future, see the information at the end of this document.

    1. CPU Chart Update
    2. Adabas Update
    3. CICS Response Time Spikes

    1.  CPU Chart Update

I just realized that I had neglected to copy over updates for the IBM G2 through G5 processors with the latest OS/390 R10 LSPRs.  That means that the February CPU Chart that you were just sent needs to be updated.  We'll be sending out a March 2002 CPU Chart with the latest ratings next week.  I'm sorry if this has caused any inconvenience.

    2. Adabas Update

We sent out my SHARE presentation, "Cheryl's Hot Flashes #7," last week to our electronic subscribers.  In it, there was a note about a CPU increase (instead of the expected decrease) that Wolfgang Schott of IT-Austria had seen with Adabas when moving to a z900 from a G6 processor.  Strobe reports showed it appeared to be a problem similar to the cache problem found and resolved in SAS.  My note, however, referred to Adabas in general, when, in fact, the increased CPU times were only occurring in a single utility, ADACMP, a CPU intensive compress utility. Software AG is currently investigating this and has provided IT-Austria a fix for testing.

    3.  CICS Response Time Spikes

A customer is seeing a severe increase in CICS response times that seem to be concurrent with the SMF interval and sync times.  The usual cause for this is having DDCONS(YES) specified in SMFPRMxx.  In this customer site, DDCONS(NO) was specified.  Has anyone else experienced this problem, and (if so) what was the resolution?

    Stay tuned!
