Cheryl's List #62 -
February 26, 2002

Welcome to Cheryl's List! If you obtained this from someone else and would like your own FREE copy of Cheryl's List in the future, see the information at the end of this document.
    1. New List Server
    2. We're Back and SHARE!
    3. CD-ROMs Shipped
    4. IBM Announces z800s

    1.  New List Server

As you've probably noticed due to recent emails from us, we've changed the list server software we use for Cheryl's List.  You've already been added to our new list, and that generated an additional email that was sent to you.  The new list server will be easier for us to manage and for you to change your options.  The archives will continue to be available only at http://www.watsonwalker.com/archives.html.

    2. We're Back and SHARE!

Tom and I had a great time on our Amazon cruise and our extended trip to Machu Picchu.  Both sections of the trip were amazing and incredibly beautiful.  Unfortunately, my back went out again (after Machu Picchu, thank goodness), so I can't do extended computer work these days.  (I can stand and lie down, but not sit long.)

I will be at SHARE in Nashville, though.  (Look for me standing at the back of the sessions.)  It's the week of March 2, and I'll be giving my "Hot Flashes" presentation on Friday at 9:30am.  Hope to see you there!

    3.  CD-ROMs Shipped

Our 1991-2001 CD-ROMs were shipped out February 21.  They look great, and they even include Adobe Acrobat Reader V5.  We highly recommend that you go ahead and install the new version of Adobe.  It not only looks better, but it's much, much, faster.

    4.  IBM Announces z800s

This is really, really, great news!  The long-awaited mid-size zSeries machine, the z800, was officially announced on February 19.  This smallest uni-processor in the series is an 80 MIPS CP, which allows almost all of the customers who wanted a smaller MVS machine to play in the z/OS world.  There are some incredible pricing options for e-business applications that make this a great threat to SUN and other UNIX servers.  I'll have more in the next TUNING Letter about this wonderful new announcement.  For details, see http://www.ibm.com/news, click on announcement letters and look for #102-052.  SRM constants are not available yet.

    The new models are:

At the time that IBM added the z800s, they also updated their LSPRs for the Multiprise machines.  So I'm updating our CPU Chart and expect that it will be shipped to electronic subscribers within a couple of days.  This will be the February 2002 CPU Chart.  It takes about a week to have it printed, then mailed to print subscribers.  If, as a print subscriber, you would like to see the z800 MIPS sooner, please send an email to admin@watsonwalker.com with your company name, address, and fax number.

    Stay tuned!
