 Advanced OS/390 Performance
& Capacity Planning Class

OS/390 (and MVS SP 5) introduced many new facilities that will need the attention of performance analysts, systems programmers and capacity planners. Facilities such as sysplex, parallel sysplex, OpenEdition/MVS (now UNIX System Services), APPC/MVS, TCP/IP, and the new MVS Workload Manager are changing the focus of traditional performance and capacity management. This class, designed and taught by Cheryl Watson, provides a step-by-step approach to tuning and measuring the new facilities. Both tuning and capacity issues are covered in one class because they're so interrelated.

This is an advanced class due to the pace and the pre-requisite familiarity with workload manager, sysplex, and parallel sysplex. It is the perfect follow-up to Cheryl's OS/390, Parallel Sysplex and Workload Manager class. It was created in response to students who wanted even greater detail. If you haven't taken our basic class or a similar one, you should read Cheryl's TUNING Letter on WLM Basics (March/April 1995), sysplex (Sep/Oct 1995), parallel sysplex (1996, No.3), and OpenEdition (1996, No. 2). You can also consider this class as a "Measurement and Tuning" update for OS/390, and it would help if you've taken a previous basic performance class. (Our last "MVS Performance" class, a full week of MVS performance based on SP 4.3, is still available on video ($1995 U.S.). IBM is also still offering their "MVS Measurement and Tuning" class for SP 5.)

Audience: MVS performance analysts, capacity planners, and system programmers.

Pre-requisites: Basic knowledge of sysplex, parallel sysplex, workload manager, OpenEdition, and APPC/MVS. This can be considered an OS/390 update of a typical MVS Measurement and Tuning course, but covers only new facilities in SP 5 and OS/390.

This is a video tape of an actual 4.5 day class held May 17-21, 1999 in Sarasota, FL. Take a look at the topics listed below and decide now to put Cheryl Watson on your team!
