Advanced MVS
Performance & Measurement
Tuning your MVS system can produce many benefits, such as improving response
time, reducing system resources, extending the life of your machine, and
keeping your users happy. In this fast-paced video course, you'll discover
the tricks and techniques used by performance analysts to measure, manage,
tune, and control their systems. This unique class provides you with a
vendor-independent view of how to get the most out of your MVS system,
with minimal effort. All MVS systems are covered in the course, with an
emphasis on MVS/ESA SP 4.2 and SP 4.3, both LPAR and non-LPAR. Differences
in earlier releases will be discussed as needed.
This is a video tape of an actual 4.5 day class held in late 1995.
The course is designed to let you learn from your own reports and parmlib
members, so that the analysis you perform will assist you in tuning your
own system. A series of worksheets is used to analyze data from your system.
Because SMF, RMF, and CMF are the basis of most data collection efforts,
we review how these facilities should be managed to obtain the most information
with the least amount of overhead. A detailed discussion of SMF data for
address space analysis is also provided. Even if you use other post-processing
products, this course provides an understanding of the data elements that
are available from them. RMF parameters and other parmlib members are also
reviewed for optimization. RMF's Monitor III and CMF's Workload Delay Monitor
provide invaluable help in determining if (and where) system constraints
are occurring. This course provides recommendations on how to use these
two products as well.
You'll finish this video with an understanding of the status of the
system resources in your installation, a list of things to change when
you return, and a plan for tracking and monitoring your system in the future.
After
all, if you can predict performance problems before they occur, you'll
never have to "fight fires" again!
