 Exploiting MVS/ESA Facilities

MVS/ESA provides many facilities to reduce online response times and batch turnaround times. Most of these facilities use data-in-memory (DIM) techniques in order to reduce the I/O delays on the system. Cheryl shows you when and how to use each of these techniques to their full advantage in your system. This is a video tape of an actual 4.5 day course taught in late 1995.

Want to reduce your nightly batch window? Then learn how to efficiently use Batch LSR, Hiperbatch, BatchPipes/MVS, or Hipersort to reduce the turnaround times. See how to specify and evaluate use of hiperspace buffers for CICS or other online systems and learn how to reduce catalog search time with VLF.If you can't process the data in storage, then we'll look at the tools for measuring and controlling DASD and tape with PDSE, cache analysis, ESCON, and tape mount monitoring and allocation.

This video course shows how to convert and manage your IPS, ICS and OPT SRM parameters for an SP 4.2, SP 4.3, or SP 5.1 (compatibility mode) MVS system. Cheryl describes how to covert your parmlib members, how to set expanded storage controls, and provides an understanding of SRM's Working Set Manager. (If you're unfamiliar with SRM, the first three tapes are a review of SRM that was provided on the Sunday before this class.

Like MVS/ESA, logical partitioning (LPAR) is being implemented at many data centers. Controlling the workload in an LPAR environment can be difficult at best. You'll look at new techniques for measuring the effect of logical partitioning and learn techniques for reducing delays and overhead. IBM's PR/SM, Amdahl's MDF and Hitachi Data Systems' MLPF are all discussed.

A brief introduction to SP 5 facilities and CMOS processors is also provided. Students work with their current parameters and RMF (or CMF) reports. In-class exercises and reviews of your own system will provide help in tuning your installation.

Take a look at the topics and decide now to put Cheryl Watson on your team!
